09/19 - Talk Like a (Disney) Pirate Day, Jenny

It is Talk Like a (Disney) Pirate Day, Jenny. The whole phenomenon of ARRRR as being "pirate talk" is clarly a Disney thing. I have read some of the extant writings of several actual pirates and they were quite articulate. It has been alleged that ARRRRR isn't too farfetched because the actor who gave us that vocalization simply exaggerated a Cornwall accent and many pirates came from that locale (or was it that many from that locale became pirates?). I seriously doubt any Spanish, French, Portuguese or Durch pirates were from Cornwall, or even spoke English, let alone the Barbary Pirates and those from Asia and Africa. Today's pirates who engage in maritime piracy are predominantly NOT from Cornwall, and most of todays pirates are not mariners but bankers, brokers, realtors and such and certainly don't use locutions such as ARRRRR.

Yes, as through this world I've wandered I've seen lots of funny men; Some will rob you with a six-gun, And some with a fountain pen.

~~ W. Guthrie

It is the anniversary of the 1676 burning of Jamestown by its colonists in Bacon's Rebellion. Often cast as an early revolutionary rebellion against the British crown, this was really a rebellion against the local government's refusal to sanction the extirpation of all of the indigenous population of Virginia by the colonists.

It is also the anniversary of the exceedingly bizarre death of Giles Corey in 1692. He was accused of being a wizard. The standard routine was for such persons to plead one way or the other to the charge, whereupon they would be tried, convicted and hanged, with their possessions and estate passing to the local government. Mr. Corey chose not to plead which meant that they could not try him and therefore could not find him guilty, hang him and steal seize his property, which would then pass to his sons. The standard remedy for this behavior was to "press" the victim accused until he or she entered an plea and then proceed to the trial and hanging.

Pressing involved placing the victim accused naked on their back with heavy planks atop their body. Heavy stones were then piled upon said planks until the Victim accused made their plea and then it was on to the trial and hanging. Each time they paused to ask Mr. Corey to plead, however, he simply said "more weight" and so, in the fullness of time, they crushed the life out of him without a trial, allowing his estate to pass to his sons and really pissing off the savage rat-bastid christers who had tortured him to death

Aaand finally, we come to the anniversary of the death of Mary Jemison in 1833. She had been captured and adopted by the Seneca as a young girl and became fully assimilated into their culture. She went through two indigenous husbands and had seven children from them. She became known as the White Woman of the Genesee and when provided with the opportunity to "return to civilization", she contemplated the life of the average colonial woman and decided to remain an indian.

It is also the anniversary of a 2019 drone strikethat killed 30 civilians in Afghanistan, but I don't see why this is at all noteworthy. That's at best a tiny fraction of the civilians killed in either Afghanistan or in drone strikes and I doubt it ia the largest civilian death toll from one of our strikes either. Sounds to me like just another day in our Greed-based War On Target peoples.
