The white Queen infamously told Alice "The rule is, jam to-morrow and jam yesterday – but never jam to-day." So here's a Jam from yestidday. On June 10, 1966, Janis Joplin exploded into our consciousness performing with Big Brother and the Holding Company at the Avalon Ballroom. One doesn't normally think of vocalists "jamming", but, when an established vocalist who usually performs with a specific band steps out to "sit in" with a different band for an ad hoc performance, it is arguably a jam. If that other band happens to be one that forced music critics to create a new genre, "the jam band", then it is indubitably a jam. I give you tow legendary theough not necessarily recognizeable performances of Turn On Your Love Light: 06-04-1969 and 07-16-1970. (for those unaware of this bit of history, Janice and Pigpen (Ron McKernan) had a thing going on. Janis and pigpen 1969
